The Chinese government has called for greater efforts to maintain public order and social stability so that people can celebrate the National Day holiday peacefully.

The State Council, or Cabinet, held an executive meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao Monday to work out measures to achieve the aim.

Central government departments and local governments were required to solve difficulties of both low-income urban and rural residents as well as those affected by natural disasters, a statement released from the meeting said.

Authorities were also required to step up security measures in key regions and major activities, the statement said.

Organizers of major celebration events should carry out tight security controls and monitoring of venues and set down emergency plans, it said.

The State Council warned of risks brought by the A/H1N1 influenza epidemic and asked authorities to put in place all possible preventive measures.

Special checks should be conducted in the mining, dangerous chemical, construction and power industries, as well as on fireworks and crowded public venues, it said.

All government departments should keep sound market order by ensuring market supply and monitoring prices.

Special efforts should be made to ensure the efficient transport of major production materials, including coal and oil, and to ensure normal supplies of water, electricity, gas and gasoline, the statement said.

The government has planned a series of celebrations to mark the 60th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China which falls on Oct. 1, including a military parade and gala performance in Tian'anmen Square.

This year's National Day holiday is set for Oct. 1-8, one day longer than previous years because it coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the mooncake festival, which falls on Oct. 3 this year.
