On December 1, 1996, China accepted the terms of the 8th Article of the International Monetary Fund Agreement and made the RMB convertible on the current account. Meeting the requirements of the International Monetary Fund ahead of schedule was a sign that reform of China's foreign exchange management system had achieved significant progress.
