More than 160, 000 civil servants in eastern China's Shandong Province experienced a day without cars and air conditioners on Monday, as part of the province's week-long energy conservation campaign, the Qilu Evening News reports.

At the request of the Shandong provincial government, about 250 departments in the province voluntarily took part in the campaign by suspending shuttle bus services, shutting down elevators in buildings with fewer than seven floors, and turning off air conditioners in offices.

Jiang Yikang, secretary of the Communist Party of China Shandong Committee led by example, by walking to his office in the morning. Governor Jiang Daming rode a bicycle to work.

The province plans to hold an "energy shortage experience day" annually in the future.
