China: Developed countries should cut greenhouse gas emissions
Adjust font size:

China reiterated?in Beijing?Tuesday that developed countries should take more responsibility in massively cutting greenhouse gas emissions in a new global pact on climate change.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu made the remarks when asked to comment on Japan's next prime minister Yukio Hatoyama's promise of a 25-percent greenhouse gas cut by 2020, to achieve levels lower than 1990 in Japan.

"The international community should adhere to the principle of 'common but differentiated responsibilities', take different countries' situation and capability into full consideration," Jiang said, adding that China hopes all countries could help carry out the global pact on climate change and the Kyoto Protocol comprehensively, effectively and persistently.

"We also hope the developed nations should honor their commitments to "support developing countries with funds and technology transfers," Jiang said.

A new global pact on climate change to replace the current Kyoto Protocol is expected to be reached at a UN meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December. The current pact will expire in 2012.
