Indonesia will begin planting one billion trees nation wide next week in a bid to reduce carbon emission, Forestry Minister Zulkipli Hasan said Jakarta Thursday.

Indonesia has committed to reducing the greenhouse gas emission by 26 percent by 2020 and may extend the target to 41 percent under international assistance.

Hasan was quoted by Antara news agency as saying that the move would kick off at a ceremony participated by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Nov. 28.

Indonesia, which has been attempting to expand farm land to boost production, has got pledge from Norway to assist one billion U.S. dollar for two-year moratorium on cutting trees and shifting forest area to other purposes, starting next year.

Indonesia has struggled to cope with deforestation, which has been blamed for most of floods and landslide, by planting nearly 100 million trees years ago.
