Yi plants her first tree in the Horqin desert in Hure Banner, Tongliao City, northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, in 2004. Planting trees across deserts is extremely difficult. Yi didn't quite understand the challenge she had taken on -- when local residents told her that sand dunes were actually able to "move"-- until almost 10,000 newly planted saplings were uprooted by desert winds overnight.
