Rains affect rescue operations in ferry accident in India

Heavy rains created difficulties Wednesday for the rescue operation for the victims of the ferry which capsized Monday evening, while hundreds of Indian paramilitary and army continued the rescue operations in the worst ever ferry accident in India's northeast state of Assam.

An overcrowded river ferry broke in two and sank in northeast India during a severe storm on Monday, leaving at least 105 people dead and almost as many missing, local police said.

However, operations have resumed again later in the day.

A local television channel in state capital of Guwahati, DY 365, telecast many people complaining of facilities scarcity in hospitals in Dhubri district where many injured have been admitted.

The accident took place in this district Monday late evening when the ferry carrying around 400 people sank in the Brahmaputra river following a storm.

Meanwhile, the Assam government has sought the help of Bangladesh government as many bodies might have been washed downstream in strong current in the river.

Sources said that India's ruling Congress party general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was likely to visit Dhubri on Wednesday.
