Typhoon Nesat, which slammed on the eastern Philippines, is changing its way and may make landfall in northern Vietnam on Friday night or Saturday morning, forecast the Vietnam National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting (CHF) on Wednesday.

With wind speeds of 149 kph, Nesat is rated as a grade 13 hurricane on the Beaufort scale. But wind speeds are expected to reduce to 135 kph (grade 12) when it hangs over northern Vietnam, said the report, adding the possibility of the typhoon making landfall is about 70 percent.

At about 4 p.m, on Friday, local time, it is expected to reach China's Hainan Province with wind speeds of between 118-149 kph before entering Vietnamese waters, forecast international weather experts.

The typhoon has caused strong winds up to 14-15 grade in the northern South China Sea. Meanwhile, strong monsoon winds are expected to hit Vietnam about the same time with Nesat, causing torrential rain and possibly whirlwinds along the coastal areas from central Binh Thuan province to southern Ca Mau province.
