Flash flood recedes from inundated S.China town

A flash flood that nearly submerged the town of Beigeng in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has receded, local officials said on Saturday.
Post-flood reconstruction has already begun in the town, despite the fact that some of the town's homes are still submerged, said Li Zhaohui, the acting county head of Xincheng County, where Beigeng is located.
Traffic into the town has resumed and local epidemic prevention departments have begun monitoring the town's drinking water supplies for possible contamination, Li said.
The flash flood was triggered by days of heavy rain that began lashing Beigeng on June 29. The rain stopped the following day, with the flood receding by noon on July 1.
Ruan Zhongfeng, the Party secretary of Beigeng, said that no casualties have been reported as a result of the flooding. He added that relief supplies have been distributed to the town's residents.
About 13,000 mu (866.67 hectares) of farmland were destroyed by the floodwaters and several sections of the town's roads were submerged.
The town experienced similar flooding for five days in June of last year.
