A newly constructed project to supply water to the mudslide-devastated Zhugqu, also known as Zhouqu, in northwest China's Gansu Province has been put into use, local authorities said Tuesday.

The project is capable of providing 11,200 tonnes of running water to citizens in Zhugqu's county seat, which was slammed by a mudslide in August last year that left over 1,500 people dead and hundreds missing, sources with the Gansu Provincial Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau said.

The water project's capacity is three times that of the original water system, which had been severely damaged in the mudslide, the bureau's sources added.

Construction of the project, the first amid post-disaster reconstruction, began September last year, said project manager Liu Peng.

The project will also begin supplying water to the newly-established Fengdie District, where 15,000 people will be relocated from the county seat before October 2012 due to limited useable land, Liu added.
