Colombian oil company Ecopetrol warned Venezuela Sunday of the aftermath of an oil pipeline explosion caused by Colombia's left-wing rebels in the two countries' border area.

Colombian police blamed guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) for the attack on Friday against the Cano Limon-Covenas pipeline in the northwest municipality Teorama, which would affect the wildlife in the area.

Ecopetrol said its operation was suspended due to technical problems when the attack occurred. However, the rupture on the pipeline caused crude oil to spill into the Catatumbo river, which passes through the rural area of Teorama.

The amount of spilled oil was unknown but the oil spill has been stopped.

Colombia's emergency response agency has launched a contingency plan to stop the following effects of the spill.

The 770-km pipeline, delivering crude oil from the east oil-rich Cano Limon area to the northern town of Covenas, was most affected by terrorist attacks since 1980s.
