Beijing hasn't seen rain or snow falls for more than three months, the longest streak for non-precipitation in record over the past 30 years, the Beijing Times reports.

The strong, cold air sweeps across the north while the warm air in the south is weak, thus it is hard to see any precipitation in the north, Chen explained.

As Beijing relies mostly on rainfall to supply water for its population of nearly 20 million, the current situation has worsened the water-shortage problem of the city.

The subsequent drought is affecting 90 percent of the city's wheat growth.

The worst drought in Beijing lasted from October 1970 to February 1971, during which no effective rainfall was seen for 114 consecutive days.
