An increasing number of youths and community groups are participating in environmental initiatives in the Clean & Green Singapore campaign, Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) said on Tuesday.

A recent survey by the NEA showed a high proportion of youths being environmentally conscious, with 80 percent of respondents aged between 15 and 29 saying that individuals can make a difference in sustaining a quality environment for Singapore, particularly in the areas of waste minimization, recycling and dengue prevention.

This has helped contribute to the vision of a livable, lively city under the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint, where communities care for the environment as part of their lifestyle.

Community-led outreach efforts, together with enforcement and enhancements to infrastructure, have helped to reduce litter.

According to the NEA, at 20 litter hotspots monitored, litter counts per 5 square meters have fallen from 17 pieces of litter in June, to 11 pieces of litter in October.

The number of tickets issued for littering has also dropped from 32,258 between January and September 2009, to 19,570 for the same period this year.
