Fierce rain pounded the river basin of the Yalu River on Thursday and Friday in northeast China's Liaoning Province, four days after the China-DPRK border river flooded, the provincial flood control headquarters said Friday.

Seventy-eight millimeters of rain fell in the border city of Dandong from 11 a.m. Thursday to 8 a.m. Friday, the headquarters said.

Shipping on the Yalu River, which forms the border between China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), has remained at a standstill since Aug. 19 as the river was still at a very high level, said Lu Xiusheng, deputy head of the flood control headquarters in Dandong City.

He said Yellow Sea's surging tide on Friday would raise the river's level at it mouth, thus keeping the river swollen.

The city is still reeling from the last round of heavy rainfalls from Aug. 19 to 22, which left four dead and one missing in the city.

A total of 76 townships in the city were flooded and 110,000 people were evacuated away from their homes in low lying areas.
