Vietnam plans to spend about 44 trillion Vietnamese dong (2.3 billion U.S. dollars) on building solid waste treatment plants in urban areas of the country from now to 2020, Vietnam News Agency reported on Wednesday.

The plan will be divided into two phases. In the first phase, from now to 2015, Vietnam will focus on constructing plants for treatment of solid waste in urban areas of the Mekong Delta region, and those which have tourism sites or unhygienic landfills.

Waste treatment plants in other urban areas of the country will be built in the second phase from 2016 to 2020, according to the report.

With the plan, the country sets a target that by 2020 about 95 percent of solid waste in urban areas of the country will be collected and treated in accordance with local standards, and 85 percent of the treated waste will be recycled and reused, said the report.
