During the last 10 years, the financial appropriations for science and technology from the Central Government, the amount of funds raised nationwide and the amount of actual expenditure for science and technology have all increased by big margins. In 1993, the financial appropriations for science and technology from the Central Government was 22.6 billion yuan, which increased to 70.3 billion yuan in 2001. At the same time, the amount of funds raised nationwide and the amount of actual expenditure for science and technology increased from 67.6 billion yuan and 62.3 billion yuan to 258.9 billion yuan and 231.3 billion yuan, respectively, increasing by 3.8 times and 3.7 times, respectively. The national input into scientific and technological fields continued to grow in 2002, and the expenditure of R&D funds amounted to 116.1 billion yuan, accounting for 1.13 percent of the GDP, which topped the historical records and ranked the front row among the developing countries.
