Traffic on the railway linking Beijing and Guangzhou, the capital of south China's Guangdong Province, resumed Sunday afternoon as one of its sections reopened after being washed away by the pounding rain on Friday afternoon.
Traffic on the section linking Zhuting and Pingshantang in Hunan Province resumed at 4:00 p.m. Sunday following a 44-hour suspension after its roadbed was washed away by rainstorms.
Following several days of continuous rainstorms, the roadbed of the Zhuting-Pingshantang section of the major north-south railway artery collapsed at about 5:00 p.m. Friday, cutting off traffic on the Beijing-bound line of the double-track railway.
Immediately, more than 1,000 workers from the Changsha Railway Corp. began rebuilding the roadbed, braving the pounding rain, and completing their task in approximately 40 hours, said officials with the railway company.
