With a growing number of people traveling overseas during the Spring Festival holiday, Shanghai Customs yesterday reminded Chinese travelers that they must make a declaration if they carry more than US$2,000 in cash going out of the country, while travelers can carry no more than 6,000 yuan (US$723) in cash across the border.
Customs has uncovered 341 cases of people carrying an excessive sum of cash last year, 17 percent more than the previous year. The total money involved in those cases increased by 53 percent year-on-year to 126 million yuan. Those caught breaking the law will be fined.
