Air Zimbabwe Set to Acquire New Planes

Air Zimbabwe is set to acquire a new fleet of airplanes as it seeks to reduce high operating costs associated with flying an aging fleet, local newspapers reported on Thursday.

Mike Bimha, the airline's board chairman, was quoted by The Herrald as saying that the national airline was spending a fortune on fuel and maintaining the planes, and this was negatively impacting on its viability.

"We are acquiring the new aeroplanes as part of our turnaround strategy to recapitalize the organization as well as reduce operating costs on fuel and maintenance of the aeroplanes," said Bimha.

Air Zimbabwe currently operates three Boeing and three MA60 aircraft.

However, Bimha did not disclose the amount involved or the number of airplanes, although sources indicated that the planes were likely to be sourced from Russia.

"We are scouting for the aeroplanes from several suppliers in the world so that we get the appropriate aeroplanes. As for the funds, we are looking for private financiers, government and other sources," added Bimha.

In line with this development the airline is in the process of reviewing its routes to assess the viability and the potential of the routes to grow.
