Fireworks Debut Shanghai's Holiday Activities

You don't have to leave Shanghai to find something interesting to do over the upcoming National Day holiday.

Major activities include an international fireworks festival in Pudong, Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, and a new Imax movie and rain forest exhibition at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.

The annual fireworks display will be held at the Century Park from 7:30pm to 8:30pm on September 30, October 3 and October 6.

The event will feature fireworks designed by artists from Italy, New Zealand, France, and China.

Tickets cost between 70 yuan (US$8.75) and 600 yuan each.

Yuyuan Garden and Guilin Park will hold events to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival on October 6.

Activities will include traditional Chinese dances and tea serving performances. Mooncakes, a traditional snack closely associated with the festival, will be served.

Other events will include traditional games.

Admission to events at Yuyuan Garden is free, while tickets to Guilin Park will cost 120 yuan each.

The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum plans to launch seven new programs including an Imax movie about helicopters and an exhibition about Yunnan Province rain forests. "Our museum gives knowledge to visitors through unforgettable experience," Pan Zheng, the museum curator, said yesterday.

The movie, called "Straight up! Helicopters in action," will debut at the museum's dome theater before October 1.

The 40-minute film looks at how helicopters are used in rescues, the transport of trunks, maintenance of power grids and police work.

The museum will also host an exhibition about the tropical land of Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province - an autonomous prefecture home for the minority of Dai people - from tomorrow through October 7.

Visitors will be able to see various specimens of rain forest biological diversity and pictures of the culture and lives of Dai people.

Those with the munches over the holiday can head off to Yandang Road in Luwan District for an exhibition of snacks from Taiwan.
