Park Hikers Warned Against Wild Monkeys

Six people were injured by wild monkeys in southern China's Lotus Hill Park between Dec. 23 and 26, according to Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital records.

The Daily Sunshine quoted the victims as saying that the attacks by the aggressive monkeys were unprovoked.

Ms. Liu, one of the victims, said she and her husband were injured when they were doing the morning exercises in the park Dec. 25.

"We were standing on an uphill slope when a big fat monkey appeared," she recalled. "We were too scared to move. The monkey bit us on our legs."

The park management said the monkeys frequent the areas near the park's Xinzhou Road and northwestern entrances. It said that since the animals are wild and aggressive, the management has erected boards on roads warning hikers against possible attacks.

A park official said the management had tried to capture the monkeys. "Shenzhen Safari Park has sent staff here for many times for the aim but ended in failure since the park was too large to round up," he said.
