Top Ten Leisure Streets Publicized in Shanghai

Shanghai recently publicized the result of the city's top ten leisure streets. The Xintiandi Street was ranked at the top of the list for its combination of historic value and modern features.

The Nanjing Road walking street, Waitan (Huangpu River sea beach) and Hengshan Road were also in the list.

Selection of the top ten leisure streets was part of the activity of the 2005 Shanghai Tourism Festival. Experts recommended the streets in candidacy and the final result came out of public voting. The streets are popular among local residents.

The organizing committee, Shanghai Tourism Administration Commission and Xinming Evening Daily said the event displayed the city's feature that combines different cultures. Some streets were exotic. Others were traditional. They are still others that are artistically flavored.

Officials from Shanghai Tourism Administration Commission said the streets served multiple purposes of sightseeing, shopping and leisure. They could show the city's image and charm. The activity promoted consumption in key areas and highlighted Shanghai's image as a metropolitan city.
