New research shows that changes in lifestyle rather than genes cause myopia in east Asia, particularly in Singapore and Japan.
Scientists predict that similar levels could emerge in many western countries, as lifestyles there also continue to change at a rapid pace.
They say the disease is on the rise these days because children spend too much time indoors, on computers or sitting in front of the TV.
