The 2002 China (Shanghai) Organic Food Exhibition opened in East China's Shanghai on May 28, bringing together many organic food producers across the country.
The fair, organized by the Shanghai Environmental Protection Market and supported by the Organic Food Development Center of the State Environmental Protection Administration (OFDC SEPA), will run from May 28 to June 6, according to Shen Shiqin, vice president of Shanghai Environmental Protection Market Co Ltd.
The exhibition only admitted food producers certified by one of the four organizations -- the Certification Committee of OFDC SEPA, Eco-Cert of France, IMO Switzerland or Greenfood -- under China's Administration of Agriculture. The exhibits cover various kinds of organic food including fruit, vegetables and grain and also includes organic fertilizers, Shen said.
"Organic food is becoming popular in China but many people still get confused between organic food and green food. Actually, they are quite different. Organic food mainly refers to agricultural products cultivated without fertilizers and chemical products while food without chemical elements can all be labeled as green food." Shen said, adding that, "We hope that this event will help people learn more about organic food."
