As announced recently, Hitachi of Japan is to establish a new joint venture in Shenzhen and to set up its first production line to turn out the projection tube (PRT) for background projection TV sets in China this June.
With an increasing demand for HD and large-screen TV sets as well as the popularization of DVD, the need for background projection TV sets has seen a continued expansion in Chinese market. Currently China stands out the world fastest growth in demand for this sort of TV sets. In view of the market needs, Hitachi decided to enlarge its investment in China by setting up a PRT production base.
Hitachi has more than 50 percent of the market share of PRT in the world and it is aiming at grabbing a lion's share of 60 percent in the world market in future.
To be located in Shenzhen of Guangdong Province, the new joint venture with a total investment of about US$29 million is to establish China's first production line for PRT by bringing in the high technology of Hitachi. As reported this product line with the world top level in technology is expected to be put into operation in July of 2002 and will be able to turn out 1.3 million PRTs annually by 2004.
