The US-led coalition began a new round of bombardment of Baghdad at about 10:40 P.M. local time Tuesday and electricity power has been cut off for the first time since the war began last week.
Huge explosions were heard, sirens sounded and warplanes are flying with deafening noises, Xinhua reporter witnessed.
The electricity power was cut off and the city is in stark darkness after some flares resulted from explosions.
Meanwhile, a statement from the Iraqi military said that about 122 US cruise missiles have been intercepted by the Iraqi anti-air defense force.
The statement added that the Iraqi troops have destroyed six tanks in the fight overnight with the enemy troops in Nasiriya in southern Iraq, a major crossing point on the Euphrates for the American troops to advance to Baghdad.
