Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao Meets Castro
Senior Chinese leader Wen Jiabao met with Fidel Castro, president of Cuba's State Council and Council of Ministers, in Beijing Thursday.

Wen, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC (Communist Party of China) Central Committee and vice-premier of the State Council, praised China-Cuba relations, pointing out since the 1990s, bilateral friendly cooperation had been boosted thanks to input from both President Jiang Zemin and President Castro.

Currently China-Cuba relations were developing smoothly and economic and technological cooperation was positive, Wen said.

Wen briefed the guest on China's reform, development and relevant background material.

Since the 3rd plenary session of the 11th CPC Central Committee, China had focused on reform and opening up as well as socialism with Chinese characteristics, which had greatly freed up production and changed China's appearance, he said.

Guided by Deng Xiaoping's theory and that of Three Represents, the new generation of China's leaders would adhere to the CPC's basic principles as well as reform and opening-up centered on economic progress in a bid to fulfill the goal of building a relatively affluent society, Wen said.

Castro expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome from the Chinese government and people during his two visits to China. The previous generation of Chinese leaders were experienced, while the new generation were full of youthful energy, he said, noting that China's future was certain to be prosperous.

Castro said he and Chinese leaders discussed bilateral relations and international issues of common concern, which made him confident about future Cuba-China relations.
