US President George W. Bush on Friday called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to discuss the situation on the Korean peninsula, the White House said.
Speaking at a regular briefing, spokesman Ari Fleischer said that the heart of their discussion was the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
He said both leaders agreed that the issue was important and they would continue their joint efforts to promote a nuclear-free Korean peninsula.
The spokesman said the two leaders did not discuss the Iraq issue during their phone conversation.
According to reports reaching here from Moscow, the Kremlin also issued a statement about the phone talks, saying that Putin briefed Bush on his just-ended trip to China, India and Kyrgyzstan.
