China to Host 2nd International Competition for Singers
China will host the 2nd International Competition for Singers here from Oct. 25 to Nov. 5, with 80 overseas and Chinese singers attending, sources with China's Ministry of Culture (MOC) said in Beijing Thursday.

The event, co-sponsored by the MOC and the China Performing Arts Agency, has attracted 212 candidates from China and 18 other countries. From among those, 28 Chinese and 52 foreign vocalists will be selected to compete for the final prize in Beijing.

Well-known singers and experts from China, Russia, the United States, Austria and Poland will serve as judges.

According to the organizer, the competition is designed to meet international standards for quality of candidates, competition content and ticket selling.

In a move a MOC official called good for the promotion of Sino-foreign culture exchange, candidates are required to perform Chinese songs, as well as professional vocal performances such as arias.

In accordance with the common rules of international competition, winners will be invited to perform at Chinese national artistic festivals. And the Chinese audience will hear two speeches given by jury members.

Feng Yuan, director of the MOC arts department, said China is a large nation with a long musical tradition. Since 1978, when the opening-up policy was adopted, China has attached much importance to musical education. More and more Chinese youth have scored top prizes in international professional competitions, which not only promotes Chinese music and culture, but also enhances cultural exchanges.

Held once every three years, this is one of the only international competitions initiated in China. The 1st International Competition for Singers was held in 2000, with 52 candidates from 16 countries and regions attending.
