Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Friday that the current session of the United Nations General Assembly should focus on promoting harmonious coexistence among countries.
"To resolve hot button issues and peacefully settle international disputes through dialogue and cooperation... is not only what the UN Charter explicitly calls for, but also the right way to uphold world peace and stability and achieve mutual benefit and win-win for all," Yang said in a speech delivered at the general debate of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly.
He reiterated China's stance on a wide range of issues, including the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, the Iranian nuclear issue, the Middle East peace process, Darfur, climate change, and UN reform.
"China remains committed to seeking a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue to uphold peace and stability on the Peninsula and in northeast Asia," Yang said.
"The Six-Party Talks have become an important platform for the parties concerned to maintain dialogue and consultations on realizing denuclearization on the Peninsula, normalizing relations between the countries concerned and building a new harmonious architecture in northeast Asia," he added.
On the Iranian nuclear issue, Yang said diplomatic negotiations remain the best option for a peaceful solution and meet the common interests of the international community.
"China opposes nuclear weapon proliferation and stands for upholding the international nuclear nonproliferation regime and peace and stability in the Middle East," he said. "No nonproliferation efforts should deviate from the goal of upholding international peace and stability."
