Chilean Supreme Court approves Fujimori's extradition
Adjust font size:

Chile's Supreme Court approved on Friday former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori's extradition to Peru for human rights violations and corruption, Supreme Court officials said on Friday.

Peru's former President Alberto Fujimori, laughs while speaking by phone at his home in the neighborhood of Chicureo in Santiago, Monday, July 9, 2007.

The final verdict was taken by judges Alberto Chaigneau, Jaime Espoz, Hugo Dolmestch, Ruben Ballesteros and Nibaldo Segura.

Judge Alberto Chaigneau published the verdict on Friday morning, which can not be appealed and is definitive.

When asked if Fujimori must leave Chile soon, Chaigneau said "the judicial power finishes (its task) by notifying the verdict to the lawyers, the extradited and the Foreign Ministry and the Executive Power so that they do whatever is necessary."

The approval made Friday revoked the first verdict, sentenced on July 11 by Judge Orlando Alvarez, rejecting the extradition request.

Fujimori has been in Chile since November of 2005 and is currently under house arrest in an exclusive condominium in Santiago's outskirts.

Government sources said there are two alternatives to extradite Fujimori: a Chilean Air Force aircraft or an aircraft sent from Lima to take him to Peru.
