China and Italy are committed to developing a new strategic partnership, said State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan Tuesday, adding the Chinese government is to join hands with Italy to upgrade bilateral ties up to a higher level.

 

Tang made the remarks when meeting with visiting Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema.

 

The two countries have transcended their difference in historical and cultural traditions, political systems and development mode, and work closely to promote their new strategic partnership in an all-round way, Tang said.

 

D'Alema appreciated the great achievements China has made since its reform and opening-up as well as China's important role on the international arena.

 

He said the Italian government highly values its relations with China, and is willing to further enhance bilateral exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy, culture and other areas.

 

The two sides also conferred on other international and regional issues of common concern.

 

D'Alema started his four-day China trip on Sunday as guest of Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing.
