Ahmadinejad: Enemies Fail in Plot Against Iran's Nuclear Issue
Adjust font size:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Monday that Iran's enemies had failed in their plot against the country's nuclear issue, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"Iran is the only country which has declared its readiness to allow other countries to participate in its nuclear activities and has always urged the need for negotiations, dialogue and reason," Ahmadinejad told a gathering of heads of state universities.

This is a proof of the peaceful nature of the country's nuclear activities, he said.

He said that the enemies now decided to sow the seed of discord inside Iran, but the knowledgeable nation of Iran will show again that they will remain united and integrated in the face of hostile elements, adding Iran's enemies failed in attempt to demolish the country's nuclear program.

Meanwhile, Ahmadinejad also criticized a UN Security Council resolution on Iran's nuclear issue.

On July 31, the Security Council adopted a resolution by a vote of 14 to 1, urging Tehran to "suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development" by Aug. 31 or face possible sanctions.

Due to insistence of council members such as Russia and China, the resolution dropped the threat of immediate sanctions and required the council to hold further discussions before sanctions are considered.

Iranian officials have recently expressed indignation over the UN demand to halt enrichment activities, warning that if the United Nations takes harsh measures to force Iran to comply, Iran would quit the Non-Proliferation Treaty and stop cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The United States has accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under a civilian front, a charge categorically denied by Tehran which says that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
