The International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism will be deliberated and probably approved by China's lawmakers, at an upcoming four-day legislative session scheduled to commence on February 25.
It was decided on Friday that the top-level legislative session, the 20th of its kind for the Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress (NPC), will be convened in Beijing from February 25 to 28.
The convention, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 9, 1999, went into effect on April 10, 2002 and had been signed by 138 countries by August 16, 2005. The Chinese government signed the convention on November 13, 2001.
The approval of the convention will be conducive to stemming the financing by the overseas anti-Chinese forces to the domestic terrorist activities, and help safeguard national security and social stability, demonstrate China's resolution to fight terrorism and showcase the country's image as a responsible country in the international society, a senior lawmaker said on Friday.
