Taliban Commander Killed, 10 Militants Captured in Afghanistan

Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers killed an important Taliban commander and his son Thursday, and captured 10 militants in Afghanistan's southern province of Uruzgan, an Afghan official said.

"One of the important Taliban commanders Mullah Tor and his son were killed in an operation carried out by ANA soldiers in Charchino district of Uruzgan lasting from this morning till afternoon. Ten Taliban militants were captured during the operation," Defense Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi said.

"There is no casualty from the side of ANA," he added.

Uruzgan, the home province of Taliban's chief Mullah Mohammad Omar was the scene of heavy gun battles early in the week, during which according to Afghan officials up to 50 insurgents have been killed.

On the same day, three suspected Taliban militants were killed and 15 others arrested as US and Afghan troops encountered with the militants in Uruzgan.

About 40 to 50 Taliban militants were killed Monday during an operation carried out by Afghan and Coalition forces in the same province.

Remnants of Taliban, whose regime was ousted in late 2001, have vowed to continue Jihad or holy war till the withdrawal of US-led foreign troops from the post-Taliban central Asian state.
