Kyrgyzstan to Investigate Storming of Government

Kyrgyzstan acting President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has created a special state committee to look into last week's storming of the government headquarters in the capital city of Bishkek, a Kyrgyz official said Thursday.

Reports from Bishkek cited the official as saying that the committee will be led by Kyrgyz security council chief Miroslav Niyazov and its members include Deputy Prime Minister Daniyar Usenov, Prosecutor General Azimbek Beknazarov and other senior officials.

The committee will investigate the storming, and present a report on it before July 5. It is also expected to discuss measures for the further stabilization of the country's domestic situation and the promotion of social harmony.

Last Friday, thousands of supporters of the "Homeland Kyrgyzstan" party's leader Urmatbek Baryktabasov, staged a massive demonstration in Bishkek and briefly stormed the government building to protest the electoral commission's rejection of Baryktabasov's candidacy for the July 10 presidential election.

The Central Electoral Commission barred Baryktabasov from registering as a presidential candidate, saying he had taken Kazakh citizenship and was no longer Kyrgyz.

The Kyrgyz interior ministry dispatched more than 1,000 anti-riot police to disperse the demonstrators, arresting 216 people for participating in the storming of the government headquarters.
