Romanian President Reiterates One-China Principle

President Traian Basescu reiterated in Bucharest Thursday Romania's adherence to the one-China policy, saying such stance will remain unchanged.

The president made the remarks while meeting with He Luli, vice chair of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee.

He said it is reasonable for China to seek reunification, adding that he hoped the reunification will be achieved by peaceful means.

Basescu also hoped that China will increase its investment in Romania, saying all Romanian political parties, including the Democratic Party of Romania led by himself, have made efforts to develop relations with China.

He said that Romania, now a NATO member, has maintained the traditional friendship with China, and will still be a reliable friend of China after its entry into the European Union in 2007.

He Luli, head of the Chinese legislature delegation, said that Basescu this year spent the Chinese traditional Spring Festival in the Chinese Embassy in Romania, demonstrating that Basescu valued the Chinese-Romanian ties.

She said that since the two countries established diplomatic ties, both have consistently respected and supported each other, and strengthened cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, technology, culture and education.

She said China respects Romania's choice for its own way of development and pursuit of domestic and foreign policies.

China supports Romania's efforts to join the EU, and the cooperation of both countries will have a more promising future after Romania's EU entry, she added.

The delegation of China's top legislature left for Europe on April 1 for a goodwill visit to Ireland, Romania and Greece.
