Top Legislator Calls for Enhancing Cooperation with Nigeria

China is willing to make "concerted efforts" with Nigeria to enhance economic and trade cooperation, especially industrial cooperation, said its top legislator, Wu Bangguo, in Beijing Thursday.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks during a meeting with visiting President of the Senate of Nigeria Adolphus Wabara,  on an official good-will visit to China from October 14 to 17 as guest of Wu.

Wu said China and Nigeria have "constantly deepened their friendly ties since forging diplomatic relations 33 years ago," and that in recent years, Sino-Nigerian ties have "entered a new phase of development as the two countries maintained frequent high-level visits, enjoyed steady growth of economic and trade cooperation, enhanced exchanges in various fields and carried out effective cooperation in international affairs."

The Chinese people attach great importance to developing relations with Nigeria, and are ready to join hands with Nigeria in promoting political trust and economic and trade cooperation, acknowledged Wu.

Wu went on to say that China supports "competitive and credible" Chinese enterprises to do business in Nigeria, in a bid to inject new vitality into bilateral ties between the two countries.

The NPC is willing to further friendly exchanges and cooperation in various levels with the Nigerian parliament, to promote regional and civil exchanges and to enhance stable and comprehensively cooperative ties between the two countries, Wu said.

Wu also expressed his appreciation for Nigeria's adherence to one-China policy.

Wabara said in the meeting that Nigeria attaches great importance to the active role China played in international affairs, believing that this visit will further increase mutual understanding and enhance development of relations between the two countries and the two parliaments.

His visit will also produce more opportunities for the two countries to deepen their economic and trade cooperation, Wabara noted.
