More than 3% of Shanghai kids are too fat

Shanghai has conducted a physical check for local kids aged under 6, finding that 3.6 percent of them are too fat, while the proportion in 1986 was only 0.42 percent. Quite a large number of them have hypertension.

"It is very likely for an obese kid to remain fat when he/she grows up, and it will lead to various fatal diseases like diabetes, hypertension, cancer and gout," said Ji Chengye, the director of the Institute of Adolescent Health.

"Today many young people and even kids are afflicted with cardiovascular disease, especially those who are too fat," said a doctor.

15 percent of parents and 20 percent of grandparents think that fat children are cute. However, their wrong concept that has caused a series of health problems to their kids.
