A Chinese language teacher in Chongqing has resolved to quit smoking after reading an essay about his habit written by one of his students.

Junior high school student Hu Yangjin shows her essay which has convinced her teacher to quit smoking. She wrote the composition on May 31, 2007.

Hu Yangjin attends a junior high school and noticed her teacher liked to smoke during classes, and coughs incessantly, the Chongqing Economic Times reported.

She felt confused because she knew while her teacher was not affluent, his expenditure on tobacco increased. She decided to craft a special composition to help him stop.

The 15-year-old researched the prices of her teacher's favorite cigarette brand and calculated his income and expenditure on cigarettes and other daily consumables.

After reading the article, the teacher said he was deeply touched by his student's kindness.

It was also reported that he was astonished to learn he spent 20 percent of his monthly income on tobacco. If he keeps up this habit, he will save only 360 yuan or about US$47 at the end of the year.

The teacher signed an agreement with Hu Yangjin and promised he would pay his annual savings as a fine if he resumes smoking.
