Natural Disasters Leave Over 300 People Dead in China

Over 300 people had been killed in geological disasters across China by late July, said sources from the Chinese Ministry of Land and Resources.

The incidence of geological disasters has been increasing along with increased rainfall in many areas of the country this year.

Chinese vice premier Zeng Peiyan urged further efforts to prevent geological disasters by stepping up patrols and enhancing awareness.

A number of mechanisms have been launched.

In April, a nationwide emergency command network was launched for the prevention of geological disasters during the flood season.

In the meantime, the Chinese Ministry of Land and Resources has begun a program designed to forecast and warn of geological disasters with the cooperation of meteorological organizations at different levels.

A total of 14 geological disasters were monitored and forecast, and over 2,000 people were spared from death or injuries, said Jiang Jianjun, head of the geology and environment division of the ministry.
