Residents in the northwestern Chinese city of Xi'an have been told to keep their indoor temperatures between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius during the heating-service period this winter, in an effort to save natural gas.
Similar measures are being taken in Beijing.
The move came after Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, witnessed a shortage of natural gas supply during the past month.
Meanwhile, governmental organs, businesses, commercial and office buildings, shopping malls, classrooms and other public places were also asked to keep their temperatures at 18 degrees or less, according to the municipal government.
Hotels and entertainment places can raise their temperatures to 20 degrees, but no higher, the bulletin said.
All natural gas users were required to regulate the heating and temperatures with changing weather conditions.
In times of shortage, the government will supply gas only at designated periods and designated volume. Citizens are encouraged to use alternative fuels, such as solar energy.
