The Chinese government announced Thursday that it has formally ratified the World Health Organizations' Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The international treaty aims to stub out tobacco advertising.
The news came in a joint statement from 13 Chinese government departments, including the Ministry of Health.
According to the joint statement, cigarette vending machines would not be allowed, and no approvals will be given for any new cigarette production facilities. The government will also take strict measures to ban smoking in public places.
A vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission said enforcement of relevant laws and regulations regarding the sector would be also strengthened nationwide, with particular emphasis on protecting Chinese youth from the dangers of smoking.
