Over 1,000 Sri Lankan Children Lost Both Parents

Latest statistics revealed that a total of 1,060 children have lost both parents to the tsunami tidal waves while 3,414 children have lost one parent, official Daily News said on Thursday.

Arrangements have already been made to appoint competent persons to entrust the care of 200 orphaned who lost both parents, Probation and Child Care Services Commissioner Sarath Abeygunawardena was quoted as saying.

The department is also making arrangements to provide assistance to tsunami stricken children through various sponsorship programs, and many organizations have also come forward to assist affected children.

Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the Children and Women's Bureau, SI Jayawardene said the unit had so far dealt with over 100 reports of missing children after the tsunami and investigations have revealed that some of the children reported missing were in fact dead and their bodies found.

Investigations on other missing children were still continuing.
