Classic Chinese films made between 1934 and 1990 are to screen during the 62nd Venice International Film Festival, from September 7.
Entitled "The Secret History of Asian Cinema: China," the retrospective marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Chinese art cinema.
It will offer viewers fifteen films by some of China's most prominent directors. Most of the old films have been digitally repaired to secure better audio and visual quality, according to Huang Fang of Beijing Dragon Voices Media Co Ltd, who is co-ordinating the special screenings.
Among the films to be shown are A Broad Road, (1934) by Sun Yu, New Women, (1935) by Cai Chusheng, At the Crossroads, (1937) by Shen Xiling, Angle on the Street, (1937) by Yuan Muzhi, Song at Midnight, (1937) by Maxu Weibang, Mama, (1990) by Zhang Yuan, The Valiant, (1975) by King Hu, Plunder of peach and plum, (1934) by Ying Yunwei, Princess Iron Fan, (1941) by Wan Laiming and Wan Guchan, Spring in a Small City, (1947) by Fei Mu, Crows and Sparrows, (1949) by Zheng Junli, San Mao the Child Waif, (1949/50) by Zhao Ming and Yan Gong, My Life, (1949/50) by Shi Hui, Sisters on the Stage, (1965) by Xie Jin, One and Eight, (1983) by Zhang Junzhao.
