The Tacheng International Border Trade City grew out of the former Tacheng passenger station. It received approval to operate as a port in 1994, and in July 1997 Tacheng Customs agreed to turn the border trade city into a customs holding and supervision depot. In the same month, the port management committee and inspection units moved to the site. The first phase of the Tacheng Economic Cooperation Area trade corridor, it covers 48,000 square meters, including 2,650 square meters of customs holding and supervision depots, 17,000 square meters of outdoor storage area, 1,500 square meters of warehousing, 2,800 square meters of underground temperature-controlled warehousing, 1,000 square meters of booths, 9,000 square meters of parking area and 8,880 square meters of other buildings and service areas.
