Leading politicians of German ruling parties said Monday that Germany should be involved in the post-war Iraq only within the framework of the United Nations.
General Secretary of the Social Democratic Party, Olaf Scholz said, "We are firm that Germany can do something only in the framework of the United Nations."
Angelika Beer, leading military expert of the Green Party, said the extent to which Germany will help in Iraq depends on the role of the United Nations.
Over the weekend, German Defense Minister Peter Struck also stressed that if the reconstruction of Iraq was not led by the United Nations, there would not be primary involvement of Germany.
However, the German government seems still uncertain as to how Germany should be involved in the post-war Iraq. Hans-Hermann Langguth, a government spokesman, said there are "diverse considerations", and it is still too early to form a government position.
Germany has opposed the US-led war against Iraq and called for giving UN the central role in the post-war reconstruction and security restoration in Iraq.
