US President George W. Bush is pleased that the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously Friday to resume the "oil-for-food" program in Iraq, the White House said.
"The president would like to express his thanks to the United Nations Security Council for this unanimous action," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said at a regular press briefing.
"This will be a way to help take care of the humanitarian needs of the Iraqi people using Iraqi resources. The president is pleased with this outcome," Fleischer said.
Under the newly adjusted UN oil-for-food program, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan will be able to run the program in Iraq for 45 days to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of the Iraqi people.
The oil-for-food program, which started in 1996, has been suspended since the outbreak the Iraqi war last week.
