Deputies to the National People's Congress and CPPCC members come from all parts of China and from many walks of life. For some, this will be their first national congress -- to serve for five years as a representative for the people of their area. For others, it will be business as usual, in a changing China. To find out how the people of China are best served by their chosen representatives, china.org.cn takes a close-up look at these people and what concerns they have for today's China.
Here we meet Liu Xila, a professor with Tsinghua University.
Q: Which group of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) do you belong to?
A: I am from the Education Group of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Consultative Conference (CPPCC). I have held the post for several sessions.
Q:What profession are you in?
A: I work with both Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiaotong University.
Q: What is the issue of most concern to people in your area of China?
A: Educational issues.
Q: What proposals have you made, or what did you hope to accomplish at this session?
A: I have submitted three proposals: one on the ideological and political education of youth; one on the education of the one-child generation; and the third on reforming the guiding principles in teaching, to highlight individuality in education.
Q: What is your opinion of this government's performance to date?
A: It has been five years with creativity and great achievement.
Q: Where do you think improvements need to be made?
A: I think the government should regulate its functions: focusing on major issues so as to free themselves from petty bureaucratic work.
Q: Of the new government, what are your hopes?
A: Development is top priority and I hope that the government will carefully study and solve the problems which arise during continued national development.
