Int'l Security Conference to Help Restore Iraqi Stability

An international meeting on security cooperation and coordination among Iraq's neighbors wrapped up in Damascus on Thursday, agreeing to help restoring law and order in the war-torn country.

Lubaid Abbawi, head of the Iraqi delegation, voiced the agreement in a statement at the end of the two-day meeting.

The participants expressed a willingness to cooperate with the Iraqi government to restore security and stability in Iraq and rebuild the Iraqi armed forces, said the statement read by Abbawi.

According to the statement, security cooperation between Iraq and its neighboring states were focused in the discussions.

"The participants examined ways of controlling the (Iraqi) frontier, of fighting organized crime and exchanging information," the statement said.

The participants also agreed that border controls are the responsibility of all Iraqi neighbors and reiterated their respect for Iraq's unity and political integrity.

They strongly condemned all acts of violence, particularly those targeting innocent people, said the statement, calling for achieving the national reconciliation among different Iraqi factions.

The statement also urged Iraqi neighbors not to interfere in its internal affairs.

The countries agreed to meet again during a foreign ministerial meeting in Istanbul in the next few months.

The conference gathered representatives from neighboring countries of Iraq and a number of Arab states as well as the Arab League, the United Nations and the permanent members of the UN Security Council.

The meeting was part of the commitments established during the international conference on Iraq, which was held in May in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
